Successful Collaborative Event at Burlington’s City Hall

Panel discussion for artists at Burlington's City Hall

On Monday March 14th, several hundred area artists enjoyed a full day of presentations and panel discussions regarding the notion of the artist as business person. The presenting organizations: SEABA, the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and Burlington City Arts (BCA), look forward to scheduling similar events in support of our creative constituencies, in a variety of disciplines.

The four panel discussions were as follows:

From the Curator’s Perspective;

Curators and directors from a few of the area’s top galleries and museums spoke on what you need to know when presenting your art for potential exhibit. One main tip was to be professional in all areas, from submitting quality images of your work to how you put yourself forward in all correspondence. It was encouraged that artist’s do their homework and know what the respective gallery or museum is looking for.

Artist’s Opportunities;

Established artist, Sabra Field, and two professionals within the arts community spoke on the process of breaking into the arts as a career and the opportunities presented by local organizations. Burlington City Arts and the Vermont Studio Center have many programs in which artists may submit work for public display or join in artist residencies.

A nearly full house joined us for the day long event.

To Market;

Well known Vermont artists, a gallery director, and an art collector spoke on breaking into the art world and achieving commercial success. Topics included presenting quality work, how to price your pieces, and knowing your market.

Funding and Technical Assistance;

Members of financial and arts related foundations in Vermont shared their understanding about grants and funding opportunities. Panelists suggested that you keep your grant writing short and to the point, including high quality images where appropriate.
